The University of Edinburgh Feminist Society is a vibrant student community dedicated to advocating for gender equality and creating a safe space for discussions around feminist issues. Our core values include inclusivity, empowerment, and education, and we aim to foster a welcoming environment for all students—regardless of gender—who are passionate about making a difference. Intersectionality which refers to recognizing how gender equality intersects with or is affected by various other identities such as race, class and sexuality, is at the core of our society.
This past month, we kicked off the academic year with a picnic at the Meadows during Freshers’ Week. In addition, we’ve held discussion groups on topics such as “Feminism 101” and “Boobs, Breasts, and Chests.” Discussion groups are informal discussions held every week to discuss different feminist issues or other interesting aspects of our current society. We are also relaunching our book club this year! Book club discussions happen during the last week of each month. For the month of October, and in celebration of Black History Month, we are hosting a discussion on Maya Angelou’s powerful memoir ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings’ on the 28th exploring themes of identity, resilience and empowerment.
Throughout the year, we also plan on hosting informal coffee socials, providing a laid-back environment for members to chat, connect, and share experiences. These gatherings are perfect for anyone looking to meet like-minded individuals or simply unwind after a busy week. As we move into 2025, we’re gearing up for even bigger events, including an Open Mic night in January and a Charity Ball at the end of the academic year to raise money for local organisations and initiatives.
If any of this sounds interesting and you’re curious to learn more, we’d love for you to come along to our events!
