Mai anh sẽ lên đường – Tomorrow you’ll go back on the road

Written by Trần Thị Kim Tuyết, Translated by Daisy Shrimpton.

Introduction:

This poem is one of many written by my grandmother, originally published in Hanoi during the Vietnam War. She met her future husband, my grandfather, shortly before he was drafted. This poem was written in the early days of their romance.

Bay ở ngày dương sớm Flying in the morning sun,

Ngày lại ngày trôi qua Each day washes past the last.

Hàng đêm về cho ta Each night bring home for me

Một ánh mắt thiết tha A loving gaze.

Biết nhìn ra chân lý Know to see what's true.

Có biết không Anh nhỉ Do you know, my dear?

Mai Anh sẽ lên đường Tomorrow

Bao nỗi nhớ niềm thương You'll go back on the road.

Lửa ân tình mới nhem Memories of tenderness flicker-

Ắt trái tim cháy mãi. The fires of love only yesterday born,

But this heart shall burn forever.

Trần Thị Kim Tuyết, 1970. Translated into English by Daisy Shrimpton
